# Why One Switch to AI Drains Focus but Practice Sharpens It

A psychology study published this month found that a single switch into a harder mental mode briefly drains focus instead of priming it. Only repeated switching made focus faster and sharper. For anyone moving between their own work and checking an AI's output all day, the first switch of each block is the costly one.

I watched a head of operations work for twenty minutes last week. Draft an email, glance at what an assistant tool had generated, back to the email, open the tool again. Each time she returned to her own writing, there was a small stall before the words started moving. Not a long one. A second, maybe two. She did not seem to notice it. I have started noticing it in my own day.

## What the research shows

There was a paper in a psychology journal at the end of May, from a team led by Min Li, that pins down something about that stall. The researchers had bilingual speakers do a naming task in different language setups, then measured their [attention](/blog/ai-savoring-finished-work-builder-research) control with a quick test of whether they could send their eyes where they intended rather than where something on the screen pulled them.

The result ran against the obvious guess. A single round of switching between languages did not prime [attention](/blog/ai-notifications-attention-hijack-builder-research). It depleted it. Reaction times got significantly longer right after one switch, and the size of the effect was large, not a rounding error. Then the second experiment changed one thing. Instead of switching once, people switched again and again across two blocks. The drain flipped. After repeated switching, reaction times got shorter and accuracy went up. The capacity that one switch spent, sustained switching seemed to rebuild.

## What it doesn’t tell us yet

One paper, one lab, one task. The people in it were switching between languages, not between their own work and an AI tool, and the focus test was a fast lab measure, not a Tuesday afternoon. The second experiment was small, around forty people. So the jump from this to your workday is mine, not the study’s. What the research establishes is narrow and worth holding loosely: a single switch can cost before it pays, and repetition can change the price.

## One thing to notice in your work today

A day spent supervising AI work is a day of first switches. Write for a bit, check the output, back to writing, open the tool again. If the study points at anything real, the small stall each time you return is not weakness and not a reason to push harder. It is the switch itself.

One pattern is worth watching this week. When a longer stretch in a single mode gets protected, does the stall fade?
